Building a design production machine for an online printing leader. From implementing a rebranding to launching the best configurator on the market.

From a rebranding to the brand incorporation

Before working with Unikorns, Chroma faced a situation familiar to many fast-growing companies. Their need to scale clashed with a severe lack of internal design resources.

The in-house team was completely focused on their own tasks and overloaded. Frontend developers had to build the platform almost blind. They reused outdated components, which led to endless edits and wasted time. Visual marketing materials were created in chaos. There wasn't a single design system.

Chroma understood that they needed a massive rebranding to reach a new level and secure their leadership. At the same time, the client thought strategically. It was obvious that giving a strong new identity to their overloaded design team would mean going back to the old chaos. It would break the new guidelines and burn the rebranding investment. They simply didn't have the free hands for a systematic rollout of such a large volume of materials.

That is why Chroma came to us with a comprehensive task. The plan was clear from day one. First, the creative division at Unikorns Agency develops a bold and fresh visual identity. Then, the Unikorns Work team seamlessly takes over the ready brand. They handle all the visual routine and set up predictable design production for marketing and product development for years to come.

Seamless integration into client workflow

Chroma needed a design partner who could join their processes without a long onboarding or micromanagement. We brought in the Unikorns Work team and divided the project into two strong parallel streams. The first was scaling marketing production, and the second was designing the product UX/UI for the e-commerce platform.

The main challenge was to keep these two streams aligned and maintain total brand consistency. To achieve this, we built a structure with a single control center. One Project Manager and one Design Team Lead supervised both directions.

We didn't just become contractors. We became an external design department for Chroma.

  • We synced with the client's internal rhythms by joining regular retrospectives and helping prioritize the backlog.

  • We set up a transparent process. All evolutionary brand changes went through our Art Director's strict filter to ensure the system would not break under new tasks.

  • We introduced flexible allocation. A full-time designer was assigned to the project for regular communication and daily tasks. During big product launches, we smoothly added extra specialists. When the workload dropped, we carefully withdrew them to optimize the client's budget.

Systematic production at high speeds

Instead of creating disconnected creative concepts, we launched a predictable production line for Chroma. We divided the work into two main flows: marketing support and product design. In each area, we didn't just close tickets. We developed the system built by the Agency so that every brand element worked for the business.

Marketing design production

A massive rebranding needs aggressive and consistent communication across all platforms. We took over all the routine work so Chroma's in-house team could finally breathe. Every day, our designers delivered dozens of ready materials. This included adapting banners for targeted campaigns, creating social media templates, and designing complex, multi-page printed products. The client no longer needed to look for freelancers, brief them from scratch, and control every pixel. We provided a stable, smooth flow of designs that strictly followed the new guidelines and never lost quality, even during peak volumes.

The new Chroma identity relied heavily on graphics. Soon, the basic elements from the brand book weren't enough. Our designers worked closely with illustrators to develop a scalable illustration system. This wasn't just a random set of pictures. It was a flexible constructor. Thanks to this approach, we easily adapted the visual language to completely different client scenarios. We covered situational marketing, seasonal promotions, and complex technical offers.

Once the brand was strong in static formats, it became clear that it needed dynamics to lead in the digital space. As soon as the client was ready for this step, we brought in our motion designers. They didn't just animate existing pictures. They built the fundamental rules for the motion system. We defined how the brand breathes, how elements appear, and how they interact with user attention. This allowed us to bring the communication to life while keeping the Chroma brand DNA 100% recognizable in every video and animation.

Product design

The other half of our team focused entirely on the heart of Chroma's business. That is their e-commerce platform. Unikorns Work designers integrated directly into the processes of the client's in-house developers. The biggest challenge was designing an advanced online printing configurator. Printing involves hundreds of overlapping variables. Users must choose paper types, thickness, formats, and post-press finishing options. We took these complex logic trees apart and repacked them into a clean, intuitive user journey. Now, clients can easily build their orders without getting lost in technical terms.

We wanted to stop front-end developers from ever having to "design in code." So, we systematized the entire interface. All our work was collected into a comprehensive UI component library. We thought through all button states, input fields, notification systems, and micro-interactions. As a result, the developers received a strict framework ready for implementation. This didn't just make the platform look flawless. It also radically reduced the technical debt and allowed the client to launch new product features several times faster.

From visual chaos to recognized leadership

The main result of our work is measured not only by the number of delivered designs but also by the peace of mind we gave the business. We completely freed the Chroma team from design routine and the need to look for freelancers for every new task.

  • Total consistency. Today, users get a single and seamless brand experience no matter where they interact with Chroma. It works perfectly on the mobile website, in the configurator, via email campaigns, or through banner ads.

  • Faster Time-to-Market. The new UI component library greatly reduced the client's technical debt and sped up the launch of new solutions.

  • The best product in the niche. According to Chroma representatives, they now have the best advanced online printing configurator on the market. Competitors have already started copying our UX solutions, which only confirms that we chose the right direction.

You brought structure and clarity to our processes. By aligning design across all teams, you helped us maintain consistency and improve overall brand quality. More importantly, you brought the professional design expertise we were missing. Thanks to this, we have moved to a completely new level.
